EXPERIENCES

Tasmania's experiences cover a lot of ground, from outdoor adventures and wellness journeys to scenic drives and places worth staying longer.

Some visitors chase adrenaline, while others seek stillness. Fast paced or slow, intense or quiet, Tasmania invites visitors to move at their own pace. It is not just what visitors do; it is the local people and landscapes they encounter along the way that make the difference.

What the research tells us

Experiences of all types are important features of a visit to Tasmania. The experiences available here are diverse, from outdoor adventures and cultural attractions to events big and small. We have fact files, profiles and research on broader topics including wellness, events, agritourism and positive impact to help industry understand visitors and their needs.

A major research study found that around 84% of all travellers want to feel better and improve their overall wellness after a holiday. Tasmania is well positioned to capture the large and growing wellness travel market, it is already seen as a wellness destination. Nature (81%), clean air (75%) and tranquillity (60%) are Tasmania's strongest associations, and what wellness travellers seek.

Agritourism connects visitors more closely to local produce and farming, from farm tours and stays to make your own experiences and cooking lessons. It creates additional reasons for visitors to disperse across Tasmania and represents an opportunity for the tourism sector. Agritourism experiences are already being included in trips by Tasmanians, mainland Australians and visitors from key international markets including the UK, China, USA and New Zealand.

Many visitors experience Tasmania through road trips, with more than 450,000 visitors driving around the state in the past year. Road trips allow visitors to see more places and support more operators and producers. Car, caravan and motorhome travel is expected to increase with the launch of the new Spirit of Tasmania ferries.

What sets Tasmania's experiences apart

Outdoor adventures: Tasmania offers a wide range of sought after experiences including mountain biking on purpose built trails through wilderness, fly fishing for wild brown trout in pure waterways, golf on four of Australia's top 10 courses set against dramatic coastlines and wilderness walking across 2,800km of maintained tracks through the 1.5 million hectare UNESCO World Heritage Area.

Wilderness based wellness: Tasmania's wellness scene is anchored by wild places. Floating saunas, forest bathing in ancient rainforests, guided wellness walks and remote retreats; experiences that go beyond the standard luxury spa (though there are plenty of these, too) to help travellers reconnect with nature, feel grounded and escape the treadmill of modern life.

Island advantage: Being an island off an island creates natural appeal. Mountainous wilderness, secluded beaches, untamed rivers, clean air and uncrowded spaces provide environments that support physical and mental wellbeing.

Accessible from gateways: Some of Australia's top trails, waterways, courses and wilderness are easily accessed from Tasmania's main towns and cities, many near quintessential country villages where visitors can connect with Tasmanian landscapes and its people.

Diverse self drive journeys: Tasmania's road trips come in all shapes and sizes. The island is varied enough to keep things interesting and compact enough that you will not spend your whole trip behind the wheel. Follow a curving coastal drive, rainforest route or highland highway. Forage along a food themed trail or winery circuit, detour scenic backroads or make a beeline to Australia's southernmost point.

Unique stays: Tasmania offers visitors many accommodation experiences that go beyond just being somewhere to sleep. Wilderness outposts you fly into, off grid cabins that take sustainability seriously, farm and forage stays. A geodesic dome tent, a hilltop tower, a private island, a 1930s pumphouse on Australia's deepest lake. These are stories you step into where the accommodation is the experience.

Quality without crowds: No matter your activity, Tasmania delivers experiences without the crowds, waiting lists or congestion.
