Access to Tasmania

As an island state, reliable air and sea access is essential for visitors, Tasmanians and their businesses and staying well connected to the rest of the country and the world is something we take seriously

We play a strategic role as a partner and enabler, shaping the market and investing in growing demand across all markets for the benefit of the state. To do this we work closely with airlines and airports to support strong seat capacity, regular services and a range of routes that make travel to and from Tasmania straightforward. Regional Tasmania is just as important to us as the cities. Our work covers all of the state's airports, including King Island and Flinders Island.

Our work in aviation

Domestic flights
Our team meets regularly with domestic airlines and Tasmanian airports to collaborate on flights to and from the state. We focus on growing our core routes from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, while working to strengthen newer and seasonal services from Adelaide, Perth, Gold Coast, Newcastle and Canberra — helping ensure Tasmania maintains its share of domestic capacity.

International flights
We've made real progress on international connectivity. Our work has helped secure direct flights between Auckland and Hobart, as well as improving connectivity and schedules of one-stop services through mainland airports to the Middle East, Southeast Asia and North America. Air New Zealand's seasonal Auckland to Hobart route has grown in strength and capacity year on year, as we work with the airline to grow this to a year-round service.

Current aviation projects

Direct Asia flight
In partnership with Hobart Airport, we're working with international airlines to secure a direct service between Singapore or Hong Kong and Hobart. A route like this would open up one-stop access to the broader Asian region, including China, and most of Europe.

Tasmanian Access Strategy
We're working across government and with our airports and seaports to develop a holistic Tasmanian Access Strategy. The strategy will set out the Tasmanian Government's direction for sustainable, affordable and reliable air and sea access that supports Tasmania's economic growth, liveability and visitor economy.

Future projects

Our 2026 strategic plan will be released soon, with a full account of our work to date and what's coming next. Check back for updates.
