Tasmanian Industry - InterpretationThematic Interpretation Planning ManualEnhancing Industry Delivery of the Visitor Experience Tasmanian industry members are encouraged to look at how they can benefit from using interpretation techniques to enahnce the delivery of the visitor experience. The Thematic Interpretation Planning Manual, launched in May, is aimed at assisting the Tasmanian tourism industry to better plan the way visitor experiences are developed. It is a tool for tourism and related businesses to enhance the way they deliver Tasmanian experiences in order to make meaningful connections with visitors. Jointly prepared by thematic interpretation expert Professor Sam Ham from the University of Idaho, Tasmanian consultant Anna Housego and Professor Betty Weiler from Monash university, the planning tool is part of a training and support package developed by Tourism Tasmania. Tasmania has been a national leader in adopting and implementing interpretation techniques and the Government is working closely with industry to develop the content of tourist attractions, events and experiences. The ground-breaking Experience Strategy in 2002 was the catalyst for identifying a clear point of difference between experience development in Tasmania and the rest of mainland Australia. The Thematic Interpretation Planning Manual is the next phase of this implementation to extend its reach to the broader industry and incorporate interpretation planning as a core tourism business planning function. The Manual is a step-by-step approach that equips businesses with everything they need to know about interpretation planning, including a case study to highlight this process in action. The Australian Government, through the Environmental Tourism Training and Employment Program, also funded the Manual with a $5,000 contribution.
