HAWTHORN BACK IN TASMANIA

Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell on the Hobart waterfrontThe Hawthorn Football Club returned to Tasmania last week for a series of community-based events across the State ahead of their pre-season match against the Sydney Swans in Launceston on Sunday, 17 February.

The entire Hawks playing list, as well as coaching and support staff, was in Tasmania from 4-8 February to take part in football clinics and fundraising events as part of the AFL’s 2008 Community Camps.

Six groups of players travelled to Currie, Hobart, Burnie, St Helens, Queenstown and Devonport to conduct community-based activities with groups such as Police Youth Services, the Down Syndrome Association and the Edmund Rice Foundation.

The team then travelled to Launceston for the remainder of the camp, which included training at Aurora Stadium and a visit to Hollybank Treetops Adventure.

Hawks captain Sam Mitchell told local media on Thursday that the team was well aware of what the Tasmania deal meant to the Club and that they wanted to give back to the Tasmanian community.

“It is a significant financial investment that they put into our footy club, one that we have to do all we can to make sure they get it back,” he told the Mercury newspaper.

This weekend’s match at Aurora Stadium is one of five games the Hawks will play in Tasmania in 2008.

The first home match of the AFL 2008 Premiership Season will be played at Aurora Stadium on 13 April.

HOMECOMING FOR BRITISH TV AND RADIO STAR

Tim BentinckBritish television and radio actor and self-proclaimed “occasional journalist” Tim Bentinck has been in Tasmania for two weeks on a visit supported by Tourism Tasmania.

The son of British immigrants, Tim was born in Tasmania and spent the first two years of his life on a sheep farm in Campbell Town before his family returned to the UK.

Tim has spent the last two weeks travelling around Tasmania researching a travel article for the Mail on Sunday (the UK’s biggest circulating newspaper) about his return to the state of his birth.

Tim – who is also the Earl of Portland – is best known for his long-running starring role in the hugely popular BBC Radio 4 series, The Archers, in which he plays farmer David Archer.

Interviewed on ABC Radio (Northern Tasmania) last week, Tim spoke highly of the Tasmanian places, people and food.

“Culture – we’ve got a lot to learn from you, that’s what I’m going to be saying, that’s what I’m going to be writing about,” Tim told Afternoons presenter Hilary Burden.

“I’ve had the best food in last week than I’ve had for years and years.

“Young Tasmanians are churning out the most fantastic food, really top class,” he said.

The interview concluded with ABC listeners phoning in to suggest must-see Tasmanian destinations for Tim to visit.
