Tourism Talk

Issue 307 – 21 December 2010

In this issue:

Regional Tourism Review

Regional Tourism ReviewTourism Tasmania, along with the three Regional Tourism Associations, has initiated a review to identify how Tasmania's tourism industry and stakeholder groups can better work together to create effective partnerships, shared goals and make the best use of our available resources. Taking part in the review were Regional Tourism Associations, Zone Marketing Groups, Local Government, Local Tourism Associations, Visitor Information Centres, the Tasmanian Visitor Information Network and Sector Groups.

Implementation of the review findings will help clarify the roles and responsibilities of the various participants in regional and local tourism. In addition, the review outcomes will bring a greater balance to all three elements needed for sustainable regional and local tourism – destination management, development and marketing.

Decline in Holiday Visitors Impacting Tourism Industry

Tasmanian Visitor SurveyThe latest Tasmanian Visitor Survey has shown that, after eight years of solid growth for Tasmania, there has been a decline in total visitors to the State of one per cent for the year ending September 2010. Despite this, total nights increased two per cent to 8.45 million and expenditure also increased four per cent to $1.53 billion.

The number of interstate residents visiting Tasmania was up one per cent due to growth from our smaller markets, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and the ACT. This growth helped offset declines in visitation from our core markets of Victoria and NSW. Visitation from Queensland remained steady for the period. For further details, including a commentary by the CEO of Tourism Tasmania, see the Tasmanian Visitor Survey.
