The Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania (TICT) has released its inaugural Sentiment Survey. The survey confirmed another poor quarter for many tourism operators and a pessimistic future outlook. TICT Chief Executive Officer Daniel Hanna said the survey confirmed a disappointing September quarter for most tourism businesses, especially for small and micro businesses in all regions of the State.
The strong Australian dollar, rising interest rates and the growth of cheap overseas holidays are having an impact on tourism businesses across the country with similar results emerging from national surveys and reports by the Tourism and Transport Forum and Tourism Australia. Tourism Tasmania is working on a range of strategies to help as many operators as possible succeed in these challenging times. These include the development of an extensive Autumn and Winter campaign for early next year that will have a significant conversion focus, turning people who are thinking about a holiday in Tasmania into people booking a holiday in Tasmania.
See the TICT website for more information on the Sentiment Survey.
Jetstar is introducing a new daily direct service from the Gold Coast to Hobart beginning on 22 December. The extra 128,000 seats provided by the new service is good news for Tasmania with tourism, hospitality industry, retailers and other businesses to benefit from this increase in visitor numbers.
The new service follows Jetstar's earlier announcement of a 40% increase in flights to Launceston from Sydney and Melbourne and a 30% increase in flights to Hobart from Sydney and Melbourne, also beginning next month. Not only is Jetstar the only airline to operate a new direct route from the Gold Coast to Tasmania, the service also establishes a link to Tasmania from its international direct flights to the Gold Coast from Osaka and Tokyo.
