Strategic Plan 2010 - 2013

The Tourism Tasmania Strategic Plan and Plan of Action sets our course for the next three years. It consolidates the achievements and progress of the past as well as shifts to a business model that aims to enable the broader tourism industry in Tasmania.

Launched by Tourism Tasmania's CEO Felicia Mariani at the TICT Conference in Launceston yesterday, the strategic plan also contains a plan of action that outlines the activities Tourism Tasmania will undertake over the next three years.

The Strategic Plan is available on our corporate website.

Tasmania Hits the Road in the US

Representatives from Tourism Tasmania along with six of Tasmania’s tourism operators recently returned from the USA and Canada, where they presented the best of Tasmania to travel buyers in their own market. The week-long roadshow, with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, was an important event in reinvigorating the international marketing push for the State.

The program of trade education, media outreach and consumer marketing events was designed to educate North American travelers on the diverse wilderness adventure and emerging cultural experiences of Tasmania. The international market offers a significant opportunity for future tourism growth in Tasmania. Not since 2003 have we had so many operators participate in the promotion of Tasmania in this North American market.

Marketing Campaign Wins UK Industry Award

Tourism Tasmania, in partnership with UK-based Australian specialist operator, Tailor Made Travel, has been awarded a prestigious ‘Ozcar’ by the UK’s national Australian tourism awards for an ambitious campaign in the UK market. At the awards ceremony, staged by Tourism Australia in one of London’s top venues, the judges praised the multi-dimensional and multi-faceted nature of Tourism Tasmania’s campaign.

Launched in early February, the campaign consisted of a 16-page dedicated Tasmania supplement written by some of the UK’s leading travel writers and endorsed and distributed by the Telegraph newspaper, one of the UK’s leading broadsheet national newspapers. With a circulation of about 1 million, the supplement’s wide-ranging and compelling editorial features covered many aspects of Tasmania’s tourism product and was supported by a strong digital and e-marketing campaign on the Telegraph’s award-winning website and reader database.

Hobart Airport Master Plan Approved

Hobart Airport recently welcomed the announcement of the approval of the Hobart Airport 2009 Master Plan by the Hon Anthony Albanese MP. The 2009 Master Plan sets out Hobart Airport’s strategic direction and intended use for the next twenty years.

The plan will play a vital role in ensuring the airport continues to meet the needs of travellers given that the number of passengers passing through the airport is expected to more than double within the life of the plan. Key initiatives in the plan include an expansion of the terminal to cater for passenger growth, apron extension and parallel taxiway redevelopment to cater for increased aircraft movements and inclusion of a designated freight zone within the airport precinct.

Opportunity to Help Returned Service Personnel

Tasmanian tourism operators wanting to assist returned service personnel have the opportunity to provide gift vouchers for use by Australian Defence Force (ADF) members being assisted by National Campaign Operation Care. Operation Care is an initiative of the RSL and Services Club Association. It provides up to one week’s rest and recuperation at various destinations within Australia for ADF members who have returned from active service and require ongoing support.

Tourism operators interested in contributing a gift voucher towards this cause should contact Wayne Taylor, Royal Australian Air Force (02) 6224 44447, email wayne.taylor@z22.defence.gov.au

We were wrong

In the last edition of Tourism Talk we incorrectly misnamed tour company Great Expeditions when announcing the business as a new addition to our TigerTOUR database. Great Expeditions are based in Hobart and offer a number of pre-made full or half day tours to the secret places that make this island so special. Operating with only small groups, tours are personal and flexible. We apologise for any inconvenience our error may have caused.
