Marketing and development for Tasmania’s tourism industry

Tourism Tasmania has again partnered with leading adventure-wear company Paddy Pallin to produce their 2009-2010 summer catalogue, to be launched nationally on 19 October.
A total of 50 000 copies of the handbook will be distributed nationwide of which 20 000 will be mailed directly to Paddy Pallin club members and 30 000 distributed through Paddy Pallin stores and sponsored events nationally.
The 80 page handbook has a six-month shelf life, from October 2009 to April 2010, and will feature high quality images of Paddy Pallin models road-testing the adventure wear on Tasmania's east coast.
The East Coast Zone Marketing Group supported the five-day photo shoot and each image is credited to the specific destination within the east coast region.
The partnership extends well beyond the 80 page catalogue with additional promotional activity including: a four week in-store and window promotion in all 13 Paddy Pallin retail outlets nationally; communication to over 30 000 Paddy Pallin club members in the bi-annual Boots N All publication and fortnightly e-newsletters; an online presence on Paddy Pallin’s website www.paddypallin.com.au; and distribution of the East Coast Holiday Planner in all 13 Paddy Pallin stores.
In addition, the promotion includes an eight-page spread in the Virgin Blue in-flight magazine November issue; full access to the complete suite of images taken during the shoot, and a consumer promotion in partnership with Paddy Pallin and World Expeditions that will be featured on the back cover of the summer catalogue.
Tourism Tasmania’s successful relationship with the company was established in 2007 when Paddy Pallin and Tourism Tasmania formed a partnership to produce the Paddy Pallin 2008 Winter Catalogue and associated promotional activity.
Tourism operators are invited to enter this year's Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. The awards recognise best practice in sustainable tourism within the Travel and Tourism industry worldwide.
The awards were established in 1989 by the Federation of Tour Operators, to encourage action from all sectors of the industry to protect the environment. They were subsequently taken over by British Airways in 1992, and further developed to encompass all aspects of sustainable tourism, with the explicit aim of leading the industry in this field.
An independent panel of judges, including some of the world's most authoritative experts of sustainable development and a stringent application process involving on-site verification visits by these experts, has earned the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards growing levels of respect among the industry, governments and the international media.
Each year, winners and finalists are honoured at a special ceremony during the Global Travel & Tourism Summit - one of the highest-profile events in the travel and tourism industry, facilitating dialogue between decision-makers and influencing future action in one of the world's largest industries.
For further information and to apply see the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards website.

Tourism Tasmania recently held a forum at the Tailrace centre in Launceston, consisting of a series of workshops to help participants improve their online development and marketing strategy.
The forum was attended by representatives from all regions within Tasmania and included tourism operators, local tourism associations, council representatives, regional tourism associations, business enterprise centres and Tourism Tasmania staff.
Soon after the forum, many of the local tourism associations held their annual general meeting at which Tourism Tasmania delivered presentations on the digital learning and development opportunities available to operators, with a focus on Social Media and Online Marketing.
More than 150 operators from around the State attended the presentations.
Much of the presentations focussed on the Tourism e-kit. The e-kit covers everything from the basics of developing a good website to advanced topics like search engine marketing and online product distribution.
As a result of these presentations many operators are now reviewing the tourism e-kit to see how it can help them in their online development strategy.
Feedback on the workshops was extremely positive and as a result a similar event will be held in 2010.

A new Cradle Mountain Day Pass that includes use of the shuttle bus will be available for visitors to Cradle Mountain from 1 November 2009.
The new day pass combines the existing 24 hour park pass and the shuttle bus fee in a pass that caters for the many visitors who visit Cradle Mountain for one day only.
The pass will cost $16.50 per adult, $8.25 per child and $41.25 per family.
The new arrangement simplifies pass options for visitors and will hopefully increase the use of the shuttle bus, with an accompanied decrease in the use of visitor vehicles on the road to Dove Lake.
Intending visitors should note that holders of holiday and annual park passes will continue to receive complimentary shuttle bus use as has been the case to date.
Tasmanian forestry workers will have to notify tourism operators of regeneration burns under a new agreement between the industries.
The two industries have updated a 2003 agreement, placing greater emphasis on communication and education.
The chief executive of the Tourism Industry Council, Daniel Hanna, says it provides a better framework for dealing with industry concerns.
"This agreement sets up a structure, a way that we can talk to each other." he said.
The agreement provides for increased communication between the two parties and a formal mechanism for dealing with an operator's concerns.
Bookings are now open for the most colourful event on the Tasmanian tourism calendar.
The Tasmanian Tourism Awards Gala Presentation Dinner will be held on Friday 20 November in the Tasman Room at Wrest Point, Hobart.
The Tourism Awards Dinner has become the one event on the annual industry calendar not to miss. And this year promises more fun and festivity, great food and local wine, along with a colourful celebration of our tourism industry.
Popular Southern Cross Television presenter, Jo Palmer, will host the evening with music provided by a fantastic live band BIG CITY BEAT.
Reserve seats now by completing the registration form and submitting it online or return by fax or post to the Tourism Industry Council. Book early, as numbers are limited
For those staying overnight in Hobart, Wrest Point and The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel have special rates available.
