Regional Tourism Review – The Way Forward

The release of the KPMG report marks the first step in the finalisation of the Regional Tourism Review and the commencement of the implementation process.

Aim of the Review

The aim of the the review process has been to identify how Tasmania’s tourism industry stakeholders can work together to create effective partnerships, shared goals and make the best use of our available resources. Strengthening regional and local tourism will make a difference in the regions and in local communities in the face of a changing and challenging tourism environment.

Who was involved

The review was initiated in early 2010 by Tourism Tasmania and the three Regional Tourism Associations. The review was undertaken by consultants, KPMG.

Participants in the process were Regional Tourism Associations, Zone Marketing Groups, Local Government, the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT), Local Tourism Associations, Touring Route Groups, Visitor Information Centres, the Tasmanian Visitor Information Network, Sector Groups and individual operators.

Related Projects

Since the initiation of the Regional Tourism Review two related but independent processes have commenced. The Zone Marketing Evaluation process commenced in late 2010 and aims to evaluate the operation of the Zone Marketing Program after two years of implementation to provide recommendations for future improvement. This process will be concluded by the end of June 2011.

The Sustainable Local Tourism Associations project has been initiated by Local Governments in the south of the state through the Southern Tasmanian Councils Authority. This project aims to develop a 3 year action plan to create a stronger network of Local Tourism Associations in the south with the support of local councils. This project has a focus on the southern region, however the resulting findings and resources will also be of interest and value to other local tourism stakeholders throughout the state.

Both these projects in conjunction with the Regional Tourism Review will contribute to our ability to adapt our current way of working and deliver improved tourism outcomes throughout the state.
