Survey of Tourism Accommodation
The Australian Bureau of Statistics conducts the Survey of Tourist
Accommodation (STA). The
purpose of the STA is to measure activity in short-term commercial
accommodation in
Australia. It is a quarterly census of the following accommodation
establishments:
- licensed hotels and resorts with facilities and 5 or more rooms
- motels,
private hotels and guest houses with facilities and 5 or more
rooms
- serviced apartments with 5 or more units
- caravan parks with 40 or more powered sites
- holiday flats, units and houses of letting entities with 15
or more rooms or units
- visitor hostels with 25 or more bed spaces.
Key Results - March 2007
- Room occupancy rates for Tasmanian accommodation establishments
with 15 rooms or
more decreased slightly during the year ending March 2007 when
compared to the year
ending March 2006, while takings from accommodation were up.
- Occupancy rates in smaller hotels, motels and serviced apartments
(5-14 rooms) declined
across all Tasmania’s tourism regions in the March quarter
2007 when compared to the
same period in 2006. While Hobart/Surrounds experienced only
a marginal decrease, the
largest decreases were evident for the West Coast and Launceston/Tamar
Valley.
- For larger hotels, motels and serviced apartments (15 or more
rooms), all Tasmanian
tourism regions recorded declines in occupancy rates during the
March quarter 2007 with
the exception of the East Coast and Launceston/Tamar Valley.
