V8 Supercars A Boost
The Minister for Tourism, Michelle O’Byrne, said today the annual round of the V8 Supercars at Symmons Plains, secured by the State Government, is one of the biggest sporting events on the Tasmanian calendar and a great boost to the economy.
Ms O’Byrne said the event provided an unparalleled level of exposure for Tasmania, with local, national and international media covering the race.
“The V8 Supercars Championship is televised to 850 million people in 130 countries, including about 12 million within Australia alone.
"The State Government is proud to support three-day event, which this year attracted nearly 60,000 spectators, of which an estimated 3000 were from interstate. Today’s main race day alone attracted about 28,000 spectators.
“It is estimated that direct spending by interstate visitors and crews for the V8's is more than $3 million and this does not include spending by Tasmanians who flock to the event.
“Tasmanians welcome the many competitors, officials and spectators to the State for what has been an action-packed weekend of motor sport.
“This year’s event was the last opportunity for Tasmanian motorsport fans to see long-time Holden hero Mark Skaife pilot his Holden Racing Team V8 around the Symmons Plains circuit after announcing his retirement last month.
“Mark has been one of the most successful and popular drivers in Australia since he debuted in touring cars 20 years ago.
“I’m sure all Tasmanian fans will remember this weekend and Mark’s Tasmanian send off befitting his status in the sport.”
