Tasmania on show at MCG Blockbuster

Tasmania will be on show to a sell-out crowd at the MCG when Hawthorn takes on Geelong in Melbourne tonight.

The Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, Paula Wriedt, said as part of the State’s sponsorship of the Hawthorn Football Club, the night would be used to highlight all things Tasmanian.

“More than 90,000 people are expected to attend the blockbuster, providing an excellent marketing platform on which to promote the State as a first-choice holiday destination,” Ms Wriedt said.

“Tasmania will be in the thick of the action, with a Tassie cheer squad completing a lap of honour before the game gets underway.

“On the other side of the fence, Hawthorn fans will wave more than 1000 large, Tasmanian Hawks-branded inflatable hands during the game.

“The crowd will also be encouraged to 'SMS to Discover Tasmania', a promotion run on the big screen at the game and in the AFL Footy Records.

"In yet another innovative promotion, a competition is running on Victorian radio station SEN, which is broadcasting the match, with winners to receive a two-night Tasmanian holiday for four people.

“The competition ran at each of the last two Friday night matches and has already generated significant on-air exposure for the State.”

Ms Wriedt said the night will also feature a President’s Function where guests will be treated to an all Tasmanian menu designed by Melbourne restaurant Pure South.

“The menu will be accompanied by a presentation highlighting the source and selection of the produce served on the night.”

“More than 600 people will attend the dinner, including some of Australia's prominent business leaders.

“The room will be decorated in a Tasmanian food and wine theme and will provide a great opportunity to promote the Tasmanian brand to attending guests.

“As well, each guest at the dinner will take home a Tourism Tasmania gift bag with a sample of Tasmanian tasty treats.

Ms Wriedt said the State Government’s partnership with the Hawthorn Football Club was continuing to provide a significant boost for the broader Tasmanian community and industries such as tourism, not just the football fans themselves.
