TASMANIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FUNDING BOOST
The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has received $500,000 to build on its reputation as one of the world’s finest small orchestras.

The Minister for Tourism, Arts and the Environment, Paula Wriedt, said the money was presented under the Tasmanian Icons Program.

“The Tasmanian Icons Program, established by the State Government in 1998, builds on the image of the State as a centre of excellence and assists in promoting Tasmania’s brand,” she said.

“The TSO is in great company as a Tasmanian Icon, standing alongside the Tasmanian Cricket Association and the Menzies Centre.

“The orchestra performs regularly both within and outside Tasmania, and its members form an integral part of the Tasmanian arts community.

“It is both a much-loved member of our artistic community and a cultural ambassador for Tasmania.”

In another boost for the orchestra, the State Budget announced last week also provided $400,000 for improvements to acoustics in the Federation Concert Hall.

“The TSO deserves to sound its best whenever it takes to the stage.

“The acoustic work to be undertaken will enable the orchestra to be heard as it should be heard - with world-class acoustics for a world-class sound.

“This work will take into account international best practice in acoustic design and, where possible, use Tasmanian materials and construction.”
