Tasmania Secures Monopoly Spot
Tasmania has secured three prominent positions on the new Australian version of the popular board game Monopoly.

The Minister for Tourism, Arts and the Environment, Paula Wriedt, said incredibly, Tasmania recorded the fourth highest number of votes of all states and territories.

“This is a tremendous outcome, and testament to the pride Tasmanians hold in their home state,” Ms Wriedt said.

“Tasmanians cast more than 570,000 votes, which ensured the State an influential home in the highly respected red section of the Monopoly board.”

“The featured Tasmanian properties are Launceston, Cradle Mountain, and Mount Wellington (which appears under the property name Hobart).”

“To have two of our cities named is a significant feat, particularly given that four Australian capital cities failed to make the cut, including Sydney.”

South Australia (The Barossa Valley) secured the coveted blue Mayfair spot, with the city of Adelaide next. Queensland secured the cheapest properties.

In October 2006 Monopoly maker Hasbro launched an Australia-wide competition to determine where locations would be displayed on the board, and particularly who would hold the prime piece of real estate traditionally reserved for Mayfair.

The total votes for each State determined where on the board that State appeared.

Ms Wriedt said the result was a fantastic outcome for Tasmania and would serve the state well, with makers anticipating 85,000 copies of the new Australian Monopoly to be sold within its first year to locals and tourists wanting to boast about the places they’ve visited.
