Green Tea - A local Program

This federally funded program aims to improve participants' environmental credentials.

The Huon Valley Kingborough Tourism Association has secured Federal Government funds to deliver an environmental sustainability program to 40 tourism operators of the Huon Trail.

The program will run for 12 months and will assist participating operators to conduct a Tourism Environmental Audit (TEA). The program will monitor their progress using Earthcheck, an international online benchmarking tool developed by EC3 Global.

The Huon Valley Kingborough Tourism Association appointed EC3 Global to deliver the project aimed at developing the business skills required to undertake the audit process and increase business efficiencies through better environmental, social and economic practices.

The project involves the following steps:

November 08: Participants selected and sent login or workbook

December 08: Participant workshop and training

January 09: Baseline audit of energy, water and waste

Jan - Dec 09: Monthly data collection, input and mentoring

December 09: Benchmark report prepared by EC3 Global

March 2010: Participants feedback workshop

The program will collect seven areas of data to be measured and assessed, then, with the help of trained mentors, operators will set goals, trial changes and work towards achieving green accreditation.

The program will consider:

• Energy consumption
• Water consumption
• Waste production
• Community commitment
• Paper products
• Cleaning products
• Pesticide products.

The Green Tea program is open to operators of all types of tourism businesses including hotels, pubs, B&B's, tour operators, restaurants, cafes, vineyards, transport operators, holidays cottages, guest houses, attractions and retailers.

The program is free for Huon Valley Kingborough Tourism Association Members and all operators in the region are eligible for association membership.
