- A strong boost to workplace pride and staff morale throughout the company
- Raises the company’s and or individual's profile in the marketplace through the media coverage generated by the awards.
There are many award types available to tourism and other businesses.
Companies and individuals are encouraged to select the award type that best reflects their products or services.
Tips for Entering Awards
Before you start the application
Depending on the award, you'll need to have a business plan, a marketing strategy or plan as well as information relating to human resources, customer service, risk management, environmental sustainability, cultural and social contributions and involvement in the industry.
Consider the following:
- Brainstorm with staff the good things the business does and have a sheet for staff to write down ‘great things that happened’
- Write down all of the business achievements as the year progresses; this is easier than trying to remember everything when it comes time to write the submission
- Ask previous winners for advice on entering and what they thought helped them win
- Collect data from customers during the year through surveys, customer feedback in visitor books and letters
- Refer to judges observations and tips for further advice and ensure all conditions of entry and guidelines are well-read
- Ensure there are good pictures that showcase the product well
- Ensure the business is prepared to host a site inspection.
Writing the Application
When writing the application, start with bullet point answers for each question and then flesh them out in full sentences after further consideration.
Think broadly when considering each criteria. For example, think of all aspects of your business relevant to customers, even the back-of-house aspects that aid in delivering great service.
When writing the submission remember:
- Keep sentences and paragraphs concise; judges should be able to easily identify your key messages
- Support material adds credibility to your submission; charts, graphs and tables are useful in providing a snapshot of growth and trends
- Ensure your submission is word processed and, if possible, have it graphically designed
- Ensure your submission is properly labeled, for example charts, graphs, tables, headers, footers, page numbers
- Start preparing your submission early
- Make sure you answer the question; once you have prepared your answer, go back to the question and find the answer to the question in your response
- Get a second opinion; ask someone impartial to evaluate your entry submission before you submit it.
